Class began today. The college president decided it would be a great idea to have a convocation last week to start the academic year, to give awards to her pets.

One of the faculty delivered an invocation. He says he is an ordained minister, but of what church, or what religion, I do not know. I do know that he began his prayer with this address: “Spirit of wisdom…” I thought to myself: Oh, great. We are back in pagan times, and have forgotten the one God Who created wisdom and spirits that could appreciate it. Do not worry. God has not forgotten us. As I like to say, He will do anything – I mean whatever it takes – to get our attention. We can do this the easy way or the hard way.

Last week’s CPI release reported that year-over-year inflation fell to 8.5%; however, my Essentials CPI measures 10.3% year-over-year, still very hot.

A lot of silliness erupted last week on right-wing blogs, as they laughed at the White House claiming that inflation was zero during the month of July. The White House was right this one time, however; a big decrease in energy costs offset continuing increases in other areas like food. The number 8.5% is only the annual inflation number; 0% was the monthly inflation number if you use the traditional CPI. Indeed, my Essentials CPI actually declined during July, by 7.8%. It does not help conservatives to commit innumeracy. If they don’t understand the subject, they should not comment.

The following chart shows my revision of the traditional “misery index”, adding U-6 underemployment to my Essentials CPI rate. As you can see, it was exceptionally low under Trump, excepting the pandemic spike. Under Biden, however, it is climbing to heights not seen since the first Obama administration.

Meanwhile, the chart below shows that the bond market is broken – or perhaps the economy… The 10-year Treasury note is at a record low negative yield relative to inflation.
