Back in the USSR

There can be no doubt now that Vladimir Putin is trying to reconstitute the Soviet Union. He is on record as stating that the fall of the Soviet Union was a disaster. That was a rare setback in the centuries of Russian expansionism. He has a strong influence on Belarus, and has stolen parts of Georgia and Ukraine earlier. Today we witnessed a blitzkrieg like the German invasion of Poland. This was completely unnecessary if his goal was to acquire only the Donbass (Donetsk and Luhansk) in eastern Ukraine. He is clearly attempting to overthrow the government of Ukraine and strip of them of any and all military capability. I am no fan of Ukraine, but I am revolted by the pro-Putin cult on the far right.

By the way, the Russian stock market fell by one-third in one day. Great work, Mr. President.

Gravitas Plus | Explained: The Russia-Ukraine crisis” This is an excellent explanation of the history of these countries from Indian news source WION; the presenter, Palki Sharma, is knowledgeable and intelligent. 9.5 minutes. Highly recommended.

This is not about Donbass (the small region at the right of the map).

Russia and the West

Using data on gross domestic product, population, and area, I created a statistic that measures the potential power of nations. Here is a first pass at the results, in the form of a map and a pie chart. In the map, the most powerful nation is dark blue. Less powerful nations are in shades of green, heading to pink at the other extreme. It must be emphasized that nations do not always manifest their full potential power, depending on their cultural priorities.

  1. Freedom went because America has been suffering from a crescendoing mass identity crisis for at least a half century. There had been major bouts earlier, but this one has virtually destroyed freedom of communication (a.k.a.) speech. The subtext of every line out of many people’s mouths is implicit (if not explicit) demographic warfare. How can you have a functioning society when your neighbors simply assume that everything you say has an ulterior eliminationist agenda? As Mark Steyn has pointed out (and I’ll have to paraphrase since I don’t remember the exact words): ‘when it’s everybody’s country, it’s nobody’s country. It is like a hyper balkanization tearing right down through individuals within our own families.

The reason why that identity crisis was precipitated was centralization in many forms. Gelernter is right about the cities vs countryside issue. But it is more. The Left knows well how to game scheduling and logistics to their advantage. One reason they bloviate aboit feelings issues so much is to distract us from their very practical reach for power. For inastance, the rather boring, and seemingly intractable, problem of the vast size of congressional districts should have terrified people. But it was to boring and seemed impossible to fix. It seemed to many that either the districts or the house itself would be too large, so we were caught between a rock and a hard place. Then the problem was ignored. Now we essentially have only formal rather than real representation. The forms of democracy or a republic are as much technical ones as moral. The idea that simply because our population grew, that we should lose representation is repugnant. Of course there are solutions. We were just lazy about finding them and implementing them.

How to provide genuine representation in a country with 100s of millions of people? That should be considered a major question of our time. Classical democracies were orders of magnitude smaller.

  2. The Nature of Good and Evil
Joke: “There are two kinds of people in the world: those who divide the world into two kinds of people, and those who don’t”.
Good is the path where viability is right while failure is wrong; it is associated with survival and the continuation of life. Failure is an essential aspect of learning for without it (and the lessons derived) there is no progress.
Evil is intentional punishment of existence; it is associated with arrogance and resentment. A young Jordan Peterson teases out the difference between evil and tragedy:

Humour is important so we don’t take ourselves too seriously: it is better to laugh at our self-perceived successes than cry about our shortcomings.

    1. That’s a good one, Wolfie. I think I’ve seen versions of this before. It’s one of several videos with a Malone voice-over, like he’s speaking through a telephone, superimposed on various news scenes or inspirational scenes.

Why, you may ask, doesn’t he talk directly to the camera? Because this good and decent man committed the worst possible crime of all: thinking for himself! What does a mere medical doctor, the inventor of mRNA technology, for goodness’ sake, know, when compared to a trans-soyboy employee of Google, with purple hair and piercings? He must be stopped! But somehow, by God’s grace, he goes on – and a few more people awaken each day, sometimes after someone else’s funeral…

Thank you as always. And I keep your son in my prayers. This whole thing may turn around very soon, but not yet…

For the record, the rabbis are recommending the daily recitation of Psalm 20. O Lord, save! May the King answer us on the day we call.
