A recent essay: “The error of Christian passivity”

A very important essay was published in American Thinker on Friday: “The error of Christian passivity“.

Here are some quotes. “People who are aware of what is going on around them in this country will admit that we are living in unprecedented times.  America has morphed into an authoritarian and increasingly dangerous country: the “cancel culture,” a heavily biased media establishment that allows only one point of view, federal and local governments dictating what we can and cannot do, all done in the name of “protecting” us.  Add to this the fact that there has been a sharp increase in the organized destruction of our cities while murder rates in these cities are soaring.  I could go on, but you get the picture. As one who visits many news sites that have a primarily Christian readership, I see one prevalent thought among Christians regarding how to deal with what is going on.  Basically, it’s just pray and occupy till Jesus returns, or Christ is returning soon, and he’ll straighten it all out. I find this passivity inappropriate and foolish. …I see an indication from Our Lord that we shouldn’t sit back and accept whatever injustices come our way. Passivity to these injustices under the guise of doing Jesus’s will is, to my mind, done out of either ignorance or cowardice. There is much we can and should do as believers to stand against what is going on in America…”

The comments I read sometimes are even more stunning, to the effect that the reader can’t wait for the Rapture to take him or her out of this mess. I have to wonder how we would ever have gotten an independent country if the Founding Fathers waited for a deus ex machina. The book of Genesis tells us that we get nothing on earth save through the sweat of our brows. Jesus said that his kingdom was not of this world, but I don’t think that implies utter indifference to who is king in this world.

For every Archbishop Vigano, Governor DeSantis, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, we have a hundred weaklings who reassure the leftists that their alleged conservatism should not be taken too seriously. In other words, there is nothing in particular they insist on conserving.

We pray that we will be saved by a former president who is proud of his deadly, rushed “vaccines”; who would not stop the invasion on the southern border; who would not fire seditious bureaucrats; who let his daughter and son-in-law dictate presidential policy; and who would not protect the citizens he called upon to defend the Republic on January 6.

We pray that we will be saved by a manifestly corrupt Supreme Court or Fox News. We condemn the alleged cowardice of those who call for secession without lifting a finger to fight to retake our states, let alone our country.

My Christian friends should correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think “Ask and you shall receive” was intended as a prescription for a universal basic income to support slack-jawed sloth. I think it was intended in the same spirit as “God helps those who help themselves.”

A powerful 17-minute video from an anonymous Australian. “This Pivotal Moment, vaccine passports” He asks you to contrast the old culture, where you were free to do whatever you wanted provided it was not explicitly forbidden, with the new technologically supervised culture, where you are free to do nothing unless it is explicitly permitted. Do you think that is an exaggeration? Watch.

I hope you are well-stocked. Is this what your leftist friends, colleagues, and family members want?

  1. Let me tell you what is making Christians so very passive. They are under the mistaken idea that ‘God is in control.’ Obviously this isn’t true, not near Biblically accurate! But this bs is being taught in Christian circles. It is very prevalent. I try to combat it with one verse, I John 5:19, the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. But this lie of God being in control is so widespread that it does no good to mention the Bible. This lie makes Christians who believe it be very passive. Why fight if everything is in God’s control. It has Christians mesmerized.

  2. Thank you for that feedback. We have to disentangle a lot of complicated theological threads if we are to save Western civilization.

    I understand why people would say “God is in control”, because the opposite of that statement is unthinkable. What drives me crazy is hearing people say “We know how the story ends – God wins!” It’s like saying, just sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the show. We would not have an independent country or a free country if people operated that way in the past.

    In Orthodox Judaism, we have a teaching: God controls everything, with just one exception – the human heart. The implication is that God runs the physical world, the laws of nature, but gives us free choice to choose good or evil. “Choose life, that you and your descendants may live…”

  3. Many of Jesus’ sayings, including the sermon on the mount, are the words of a pacifist. I believe that the conquest of Israel by the Romans was the last straw for Jesus. He knew full well the history of the Jews going into captivity, being freed then conquered again. He didn’t believe the God of the Jews was really looking out for them. So he set about trying to replace Judaism with an essentially pacifist cult that completely rejected any love of the world and turned the people toward an expectation of it’s imminent destruction, and it would be he who would save the righteous by sacrificing himself and returning from the dead to remake the world. He called on his followers to emulate his rejection of the world and it’s traditional ways of settling disputes. He preached a message of self sacrifice and to endure every aspect of the backlash against that absolute altruism, including abandoning unbelieving friends and family, embracing poverty and even martyrdom. He never intended to establish a religion that would last for thousands of years, as he expected his return to be imminent, within the lifetimes of his then living followers. It’s the only explanation for why he thought it was possible for his followers to sacrifice everything normal people love or need in their lives and remain consistent in it. Christianity has survived because it is a powerful force for social order and has served that purpose well in the west. We can thank the Greeks for that. While at the same time, the Christian hierarchy (recall the Just War Doctrine?) found ways to ignore doctrines of “turning the other cheek” and “return good for evil” whenever the need arose to violently protect itself from annihilation. Today’s secularist Christians invoke Jesus as savior of their butts in order to smokescreen their cowardly denial. We’ll see how mealy mouthed they’ll be when their backs are against the wall with nothing left to lose.

  4. No, Jesus said himself that he was sent to preach the good news of the Kingdom, the coming Millenial Kingdom which is prophesied throughout the Old Testament prophets. Totally unheard of in mainstream Christianity which is a lot of paganism rooted in Greek and Roman thought. This is why the Christian church has lost power like the power seen in the book of Acts. Read the book of Revelation to see how far from pacifist Jesus is! Learn more by checking out stfonline.org

      1. That’s right, there are Christians like me that are not trinitarians. Jesus was and is the only begotten son of God, the lamb of God, the perfect man who gave his life for me and you, who was raised from the dead who ever lives to make intercession for God’s kids.

  5. Most know me, here. NO ONE could call me a pacifist, despite deeply held Christian beliefs. My attitude … besides the S&W .40-cal automatic I carry, and the arsenal I possess

    … can best be summed up in the words of the following hymn:

    1 Onward, Christian soldiers,
    marching as to war,
    With the cross of Jesus
    going on before!
    Christ, the royal Master,
    leads against the foe;
    Forward into battle,
    see his banner go!

    Onward, Christian soldiers,
    marching as to war,
    With the cross of Jesus
    going on before!

    2 At the sign of triumph
    Satan’s host doth flee;
    On, then, Christian soldiers,
    on to victory!
    Hell’s foundations quiver
    at the shout of praise;
    Brothers, lift your voices,
    loud your anthems raise! [Refrain]

    3 Like a mighty army
    moves the church of God;
    Brothers, we are treading
    where the saints have trod;
    We are not divided;
    all one body we,
    One in hope and doctrine,
    one in charity. [Refrain]

    4 Onward, then, ye people,
    join our happy throng,
    Blend with ours your voices
    in the triumph song;
    Glory, laud, and honor,
    unto Christ the King;
    This thro’ countless ages
    men and angels sing. [Refrain]

    Amen! And pass the ammunition …

    Don’t let the feminized modern church fool you into thinking that men of Christ will not fight. We will fight. We ARE fighting.

  6. The GOP has got to find a way to counteract democrat election fraud before anything can be done to put this country back on track again. That’s assuming they aren’t just a part of the uni-party. If they are, we’re finished.
